Two Types of Mentor Roles or Functions
Mentors can serve numerous roles or functions that have classically been categorized into two types: career-enhancing and psychosocial.
- Career-enhancing Functions: “those aspects of the [mentoring] relationship that enhance learning the ropes and preparing for advancement in an organization.”1(p22)
- Psychosocial Functions: “those aspects of the [mentoring] relationship that enhance a sense of competence, clarity of identity, and effectiveness in a professional role.”1(p22)
