Even the most experienced research mentors will encounter occasional challenges in their mentoring relationships. In this section we present some mentoring scenarios that could depreciate the relationship’s value if not addressed. We walk through a problem-solving approach for each scenario that includes self-reflection and conversation planning. We also offer a sampling of tips and tools to aid in resolving (and preventing in the future!) the specific challenge.

Ultimately, the success of any approach to problem-solving will be dependent on the specific individuals involved and their specific relationship. As you proceed through this section, think about how your ideas for resolving these mentoring challenges might differ from those that we present, and why.
